Recognizing the Dhamma

A Study Guide

Thanissaro Bhikkhu

Published • Revised

The Buddha taught eight principles for recognizing what qualifies as Dhamma and Vinaya, and what does not. They form the standards against which the validity of any interpretation of the Dhamma or Vinaya must be judged. They are an indispensible guide in solitary practice and an excellent illustration of his teachings in the well-known Kālāma Sutta (AN 3:66), as well as of those he gave to his son, Rāhula.

    • The EPUB format is suitable for most e-readers, except Kobos and Kindles. This includes most e-reader applications on mobile phones and tablets (e.g. Apple's iBooks, various apps for Android), and on desktops (e.g. Calibre).
    • Kindle owners will generally want the AZW3 format. Unfortunately, AZW3s cannot be sent with Amazon's Send to Kindle service and need to be sideloaded via USB. Some have tried using Send to Kindle to send EPUBs, but with mixed success.
    • Kobo owners will want kobo's “KEPUB” format, which is a version of the EPUB format optimized for Kobo e-readers.
