To Be Remembered
Saraṇīya Sutta  (AN 3:12)

“Monks, these three things are to be remembered by a head-anointed noble-warrior king throughout life. Which three?

“The place where he was born: This is the first thing that is to be remembered by a head-anointed noble-warrior king throughout life.

“Then again, the place where he was head-anointed as a noble-warrior king: This is the second thing that is to be remembered by a head-anointed noble-warrior king throughout life.

“Then again, the place where, having won the battle, he then emerged victorious and ruled at the head of the battle: This is the third thing that is to be remembered by a head-anointed noble-warrior king throughout life.

“These, monks, are the three things to be remembered by a head-anointed noble-warrior king throughout life.

“In the same way, these three things are to be remembered by a monk throughout life. Which three?

“The place where, shaving off his hair & beard, clothing himself in the ochre robe, he goes forth from the home life into homelessness: This is the first thing that is to be remembered by a monk throughout life.

“Then again, the place where he discerns, as it has come to be, ‘This is stress’ … ‘This is the origination of stress’ … ‘This is the cessation of stress’ … ‘This is the path of practice leading to the cessation of stress’:1 This is the second thing that is to be remembered by a monk throughout life.

“Then again, the place where, through the ending of effluents, he enters & remains in the effluent-free awareness-release & discernment-release, directly knowing & realizing it for himself right in the here-&-now: This is the third thing that is to be remembered by a monk throughout life.

“These, monks, are the three things to be remembered by a monk throughout life.”

1. This is a standard way of indicating that he has become at least a stream-winner but not yet an arahant. See SN 48:53.
